Gravestones

Since Halloween is just around the corner I thought I would post some pictures of Gravestones and Cemeteries!  I like to look at the simplicity and shapes of the very old gravestones. Many of these are like a bold art statement, in fact hanging cupboards have been designed around the shape of a headstone or tombstone, as some call them.

I always say a prayer for the souls resting there and wonder about who they were and what their life was like.  I ask myself will some stranger one day stop by and look upon my gravestone and wonder about me!

Gravestones and cemeteries are not a pleasant thought, but it is a fact of life.  The images are often associated with Halloween and scary/spooky thoughts but I see them as a place of peace.   Of course you will never catch me waking around a cemetery at night!  I tried that once; this was in a very old cemetery on the campus of where my son was going to school, the moon was full and it was right above the cemetery, the image was hauntingly beautiful and I was hoping to capture it on my camera, sad to say I did get a good photo (see below).  I told my son I was going across the road to take a picture of the moon, I guess it took me longer than I thought and I kept going deeper and deeper into the cemetery.  I then heard a voice calling my name and jumped and almost fell  and I was scared! I then realized it was my son who had come looking for me!  My photo was a blur, but I will always remember how it looked in my mind!

Graduation 2009 062 You can go here to read about a Black Cemetery in Lamington, New Jersey, it is on the National Register of Historic Places.  I found it very interesting and did not know that this historic cemetery existed so close to where I live.  We learned about it while visiting an antique/gift shop.Graduation 2009 061IMG_3491

And, what about vultures!  Now they are really scary and so appropriate for Halloween, these two guys paid us a visit last year.  I had no idea they were as big as they are, this picture does not show their true size. Now they are scary and ugly!

This year I will be spending Halloween in a fun and magical place with my grandchildren and my sons, my daughter, my daughters-in-law and my daughter’s boyfriend.  The only thing I will have to be afraid of will be overspending. . .we will be going to Walt Disney World!  My husband will be staying home to take care of our Pug, he said he will enjoy watching the games and relaxing!  I am looking forward to being with kids and their families if only for a few short days.
